Kicks, gloves, helmet, mouth guard and cup. When point sparring the idea is no contact to the face. Very light or no contact to the head depending on the Sifu and the levels that is sparring and light to medium contact to the body. Target area for points - Light contact to the head where covered by the helmet, light or medium contact from the shoulders to the belt or sash. No contact below the belt or to the back. When a coach sees contact made as outlined above, the match is stopped, and there is a call for points. The match is then continued. A match can consist of 3 or 5 points. Free Style Sparring - 1 to 2 minutesSame as point sparring except the judges do not stop the match to call for points. At the end of the match the judges call for a winner based on technique, skill, and strategy. Free style sparring requires the student to be at a high level of conditioning and teaches students how to use their defensive and offensive skills. Point sparring is aimed at competitive/tournament sport competition. Weapons Training in Kung FuMartial Arts weaponry training offers many advantages that contribute to learning Kung Fu and self defence, in particular defence against a weapon. Students at Double Dragon learn about the range, timing and distance needed to defend effectiely and safely against a weapon attack. We learn how to dissolve the power and neutralize the attacker. The weight and length of a weapon such as the Bo, contribute to the building of strength in the upper body while encouraging increased balance. Shorter weapons like swords, knives, and sais improve speed and agility, focus, and coordination. Staff, double knives, Sai, Tonfa, sticks, cane, bench, broad sword, straight sword, double and single weapons. We learn from all these tools. Plum Blossom Stump Training (log ends) with and without ground. These methods of training were used for centuries. Among the forest in the midst of nature. Moving along the tops of the plum blossom stumps alone or two or three students at a time. Ducking, weaving, twisting, blocking, countering with and kicking and punches, keeping your balance while focusing on your goal to stay on the stumps tops and unbalance your partner. It was said in the days of these Kung Fu. Monks part of the test was these plum blossom stumps except they were also sharp bamboo sticks sharpen to form dagger like weapons sticking out of the ground. If you were unbalanced and fell it could cause injury or death. The lesson of the stumps teach focus, balance, inner and outer strength and proficiency in moving across rugged territory in combat situations. This test of skill dates back before the Chin Dynasty to the Shaolin Monastery's. These stumps are used to train between through a zig-zag and criss-cross system moving through the maze with kicks, punches blocks and chin na moves from one end to the other end of the maze. There could be up to 12 to 15 students going through or on top of these stumps just barely missing each other by inches which creates all kinds of variables and forces the user to focus on balance, timing, distance techniques and footwork. If you haven't tried this ancient method of training you are missing a great way to sharpen your skills. The physical conditioning and mental focus provided by weapons training rounds out a students training and ability in the Double Dragon Kung Fu program. |
